The Cochran-Wrenn Duo will be performing a concert as part of Worcester's First Night Celebration. The concert will be held at the Epworth United Methodist Church on Salisbury Street in Worcester (right across from the art museum) on December 31st at 6:00 pm. The church is a beautiful building that should provide a great venue for flute and guitar music!

The concert will last for approximately 45 minutes and is part of a great line up of events and entertainment scheduled for the night. Check out the First Night Worcester website (http://www.firstnightworcester.org/) for a complete list of the events and to purchase a First Night Button. Admission to the concert is included with the purchase of a button, as is access to all the other events. The buttons are also available for purchase at the door.
Here is a brief synopsis of the program, which will feature a couple of works that we have performed before, as well as some new additions to our concert repertoire:
  • Le Montagnard, Op. 34 - This is a beautiful piece by the French Romantic composer/guitarist Napoleon Coste. The work was originally written for guitar and oboe or violin, but is easily adaptable for the flute. Coste was a contemporary of Schubert, whose style and skill for melodic composition can clearly be heard as an influence in this piece.
  • Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 - This piece is an homage to the great J.S. Bach, in which Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos combines Baroque compositional techniques with the traditional sounds of his native country.
  • Sonatina for Flute and Guitar, Op. 205 - This wonderful 3 movement work by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco combines many different stylistic elements and is a real gem of the flute and guitar repertoire.
  • Monhegan Suite: A Summer Day on Monhegan Island - This piece was written by composer John Kusiak (from Arlington, MA) and was premiered in 2012 by local flutist Jill Dreeben and local guitarist Peter Clemente. It is a multi-movement work that depicts various scenes from a summer day on Monhegan Island - a popular tourist spot off the coast of Maine. For this concert we will be performing selected movements from the piece. We will be playing the entire work at an upcoming concert at Assumption College in February.

We hope to see you on New Year's Eve, but if not, have a safe and happy holiday season!

Stay tuned for more posts about  upcoming performances....
